Medicare is a federally funded health insurance program for people age 65+ and for people under age 65 with certain disabilities.
Medicare was started in 1965 when President Lyndon B Johnson signed into law the Social Security Act Amendments, popularly known as the Medicare Bill that established Medicare and Medicaid.
The Original Medicare program included Part A (Hospital coverage) and Part B (Medical Insurance). Part A Hospital Insurance covers inpatient hospital care, inpatient skilled nursing facility, hospice, lab tests, blood during inpatient care, surgery and home health care. Part B Medical Insurance covers doctors’ services, outpatient medical and surgical services and supplies, clinical lab tests, Durable Medical Equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs; preventive services such as flu shots and a yearly wellness visit; diabetic testing, equipment and supplies; home health care, medically necessary outpatient physical and occupational therapy, speech-language pathology services and outpatient mental health care services.
Original Medicare does NOT cover Long-term care, most dental care, eye exams related to prescription glasses, dentures, cosmetic surgery, acupuncture, hearing aids and routine foot care. In most cases, individuals will choose to supplement Original Medicare with a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Supplement policy.

Generally, Medicare is for people 65 or older. You may be able to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant), or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease).
Today, there are three options for people who qualify for Medicare:
Stay on Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
Choose a Medicare Advantage plan to give added benefits such as dental, vision and hearing aids. Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage.
Choose a Medicare Supplement plan (also called Medi-gap) that pays the Hospital Part A Deductible, co-pays and all other costs not covered by Original Medicare. Medi-gap plans do not include prescription drug coverage.

A Medicare Advantage plan combines Part A & Part B to become Part C.
Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage (called Part D). These plans offer a variety of added value benefits in addition to the Original Medicare coverage. The added benefits vary with each Carrier, but some of the most common benefits include dental, vision, hearing aids, transportation and a Fitness Program. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you will pay a monthly premium, co-pays and a deductible. You will have an annual total “out of pocket” cost limit. The monthly premium cost for a Medicare Advantage plan ranges between $0 to about $45.
A Medicare Supplement (also called Medi-gap) pays the Hospital Part A Deductible, co-pays and all other costs not covered by Original Medicare. Medi-gap plans do not include prescription drug coverage or added value benefits. With a Medicare Supplement, 100% of your Medicare-covered costs will be paid after the Part B deductible is paid. You will pay a monthly premium starting around $100, and you will pay a monthly premium for a Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) if you choose to have one.

A broker’s primary duty is to the client.
An insurance agent represents one or more insurance company and sells their policies for a commission. They can either work full-time at insurance sales for an agency, or as independent contractors.
Their job is to represent the insurance company in the transaction while also helping customers find the right coverage.
